Carl J. Betts, 93, husband of Evelyn Vermillion Betts, died September 16, 2009 at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center. Born April 17, 1916 in Grand Rapids, MI, he was the son of the late William Custer and Mary Ida Greenwald Betts, Sr. He was an installation supervisor for Drennan Educational Equipment Co. who supervised the construction of the Dorothy Library at Centre College, Boyle County High School, First Christian Church and The University of Kentucky football stadium. Carl was a WWII Army Corporal, a POW in Germany for two years and a member of Gethsemane Baptist Church. In addition to his wife of 68 years, Evelyn, he is survived by a son; Carl J. (Charlotte) Betts, Jr. of Hendersville, NC, a daughter; Debroah Lynn (Bob) Gresham of Danville, Ky., three grandchildren; Mary Charlotte Bizzell, Sarah Elizabeth Betts and April McCrickard, four great-grandchildren; Zo? Bizzell, Christian McCrickard, Calvin McCrickard and Allie McCrickard and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be Saturday at 11 am at Gethsemane Baptist Church with Rev. Steve James and Rev. Kevin Hampton. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Hershel McKinley, Garry Stevens, Eric McCrickard, Jim Betts, Bob Gresham, Lyle Evans and Mike Gordon. Visitation is Friday from 5-8 pm at Stith Funeral Home. The family requests memorial donations to Gethsemane Baptist Church Building Fund.
